Bio of the Founder.

Abdillahi Nur is the founder of African Community Services. After fleeing from civil war in his home country of Somalia in 1991, Nur and his family were placed in San Diego, CA. His experiences as a refugee empowered him to go to college and work on his English so that he could be able to help Somali refugees communicate with others. His volunteer work began in San Diego before relocating to Minneapolis in 1995. Nur would welcome new immigrants at the airport, meet with them for several days and help them navigate. Whether it was housing, employment, signing up for public assistance, health insurance or social security benefits; where to go to enroll their children into school and so much more. After several years of voluntary service to refugees and immigrants Nur decided to apply for a 501(c)(3) in 1997. Under his leadership African Community Services has been able to serve thousands of families and individuals in the twin cities and surrounding areas for over 20 years. Prior to devoting his time and efforts to helping refugees and immigrants become successful members of society here, Nur was a sea captain for several years where he got the opportunity to travel the world. Mr. Nur retired in June of 2017 at the age of 77.
